GT-Popping in Fiji: Fiji's Best GT Popping resource

GT Popping in Fiji PDF Print E-mail

From sheltered still mangrove bays to Great Astrolabe barrier reef breakers, the opportunities to cast poppers are right on the resort's doorstep and stretch for as far as the eye can see.

We target the Bluefin Trevally, bigeye trevally and GTs with Daiwa threadline reels on Shimano Shimano T-Curve GT Specials from both the inshore and offshore game boats.

Common by-catch are red bass, narrowbarred (Spanish) mackerel and barracuda. GTs to 25kg and Bluefin Trevally to 7kg are common along the outer barrier reef.

All are fantastic sport on medium tackle gear.

Bite Me holds several Fiji National line class Records for bluefin trevally and GTs  on the popper.

If you wish to target the 50kg+ monster GTs  that haunt the outer reef breakers, we recommend you bring your own specialised gear such as Daiwa Saltigas or Shimano Stellas.

You should bring more than one outfit as you are likely to suffer breakages from these huge fish.

We advocate catch & release on all GTs  and bluefin trevally other than National or World Records.

GT Popping 2010 Season Summary PDF Print E-mail
Written by Adrian Watt

Its been a tough season weather-wise, the worst I can recall in 8 years of gamefishing around Kadavu Island waters. January was great but the next 4 months were a mixture of cyclones, big swells and out of season tradewinds. Not what you need when you are trying to park a 7 ton gamefishing boat 30 yards from the outer barrier reef breakers... Even so, we managed a lot of nice GTs nudging 100lbs and a fair few doggies aboard Bite Me and Tease Me, the best of which were around 65kg.

Here are the Top Ten GTs on poppers this season (at least the ones I got a half decent photo of)
Not in any particular order...

Giant trevally PDF Print E-mail

Giant trevally

The giant trevally, Caranx ignobilis (also known as the giant kingfish, lowly trevally, barrier trevally, saga, ulua or GT), is a species of large marine fish classified in the jack family, Carangidae. The giant trevally is distributed throughout the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific region, with a range stretching from South Africa in the west to Hawaii in the east, including Japan in the north and Australia in the south.

The giant trevally is distinguished by its steep head profile, strong tail scutes and a variety of other more detailed anatomical features. It is normally a silvery colour with occasional dark spots, however males may be black once they mature.
