Yellowfin tuna

The Yellowfin Tuna (Thunnus albacares) is a species of tuna found in pelagic waters of tropical and subtropical oceans worldwide. We often see large schools smashing into bait balls on the surface – The perfect opportunity to flick out a popper or stickbait and hang on tight…

The Yellowfin Tuna is often marketed as ahi tuna, from its Hawaiian name ʻahi although the name ʻahi in Hawaiian also refers to the closely related bigeye tuna. Although the species name “albacares” might suggest otherwise, the fish usually known as albacore is a different species of tuna, Thunnus alalunga.

Fiji has a summer and winter run of Yellowfin though we do catch them pretty much all year round. The best time for targeting Yellowfin on poppers is January to April. The summer run starts in January with large schools of fish from 5-25kg all along the barrier reef. By March the larger fish move through averaging 60-80kg.

GT Popping in Fiji

From sheltered still mangrove bays to Great Astrolabe barrier reef breakers, the opportunities to cast poppers are right on the resort’s doorstep and stretch for as far as the eye can see. We target the Bluefin Trevally, bigeye trevally and GTs.

We target the Bluefin Trevally, bigeye trevally and GTs with Daiwa threadline reels on Shimano T-Curve 50lb class Bluewater spin rods from both the inshore and offshore game boats.

Common by-catch are red bass, narrowbarred (Spanish) mackerel and barracuda. GTs to 25kg and bluefin trevally to 7kg are common along the outer barrier reef.

All are fantastic sport on medium tackle gear.

Bite Me holds several Fiji National line class Records for bluefin trevally and GTs on the popper.

If you wish to target the 50kg+ monster GTs that haunt the outer reef breakers, we recommend you bring your own specialised gear such as Daiwa Saltigas or Shimano Stellas.

You should bring more than one outfit as you are likely to suffer breakages from these huge fish.

We advocate catch & release on all GTs and bluefin trevally other than National or World Records.
