Recommended Poppercasting Gear

We take great care handling fish and have a policy of releasing all GTs. We also like to frequently release Dogtooth Tuna. Using heavy tackle shortens fight times and ensures fish are released quickly and in the best condition possible. We also crush all our hook barbs for a quick easy release.

If you wish to target the really large GTs found here, you will need to bring your own specialist heavy tackle popping outfits.

Custom Popper rods and Stellas

Specialist Popper Casting Gear to Bring

We recommend using tackle that is of at least 80lb line class and better still, 100 to 130lb line class.

Most anglers use Shimano Stellas or Daiwa Saltiga threadline reels spooled with a minumum of 80lb braid on Shimano GT Specials or custom rods made by HOTS, Fisherman, Zenaq, Carpenter, Smith and Ripplefisher to name a few examples. The big GTs here will break anything less.

FCL Labo Popper

The most common poppers and stickbaits used are Hammerheads, FCL Labos, Craftbaits, Orions, Full Scales, Heru (Nomad) and Sebile in the largest sizes.

Expect to chew through a few poppers…..The big GTs here are quite capable of destroying even the best made lures.

Stickbaits are also very effective here if the water is not its usual crystal clear.

Use only heavy duty split rings and at the very least, heavy duty hooks such as the Owner Jobu and Gamakatsu ST76.
